“Botaurus Stellaris”

This secretive and well camouflaged bird is very rarely seen but is making a remarkable comeback after a decline in numbers and the threat of extinction.

They are on the amber list.

It is a schedule 1 species. 

There were less than 11 males in 1997.

There are now over 164 booming males in the uk.

Renowned for their “boom” they are the uk’s loudest bird.

It is between 70 and 80cm in length.

 It has a wingspan of 1.3m. 

They weigh in at 1 to 1.5kg.

They live up to 11 years.
