Heron
“Ardea Cineria”
The heron is a long legged wading bird belonging
to the heron stork and ibis family.
They are grey, black and white with long legs and a long neck. They eat fish and voles and amphibians.
There is a picture above of a heron with an eel.
They measure 90 to 98cm in length
They have a wingspan of 175 to 195cm
They weigh in at between 1.5 to 2kg.
There are estimated to be around 13,000 breeding pairs in the uk but as many as 60,000 will winter here.
Grey herons do not migrate so can be seen anywhere and any time.
Hopefully not on your pond!
