“Vanellus Vanellus”
Known as the “peewit” in flight its black and white plumage and round wings make this bird easy to spot.
When on the ground it’s crest makes it even more recognisable. Due to a decline it is now a red list species.
It is 28 to 31cm in length
It has a wingspan of 82 to 87cm
They weigh in at between 140 and 320g.
There are around 140,000 breeding pairs in the uk.
650,000 birds will spend the winter here.
