Ostrich

“Struthio Camelus”

The Ostrich can’t fly but can’t half run fast!

It can run in short bursts of up to 43 miles per hour and can maintain 34 miles per hour for a sustained period. It is the fastest bird in the world.

They measure between 2.1 to 2.8 metres in length

They have a wingspan of 2 metres (6’7”)

They weigh in at between 62 and 145 kilos.

Their head is around 2.8m (9 feet)  above the ground.

They only have 2 toes with 10cm claws on each!

They lay the largest eggs in the world.

Each egg is 15cm long and weighs 1.5kg and would take 1 and a half hours to hard boil!

They live for around 40 and 45 years.

It can kick with force powerful enough to kill a predator.

When threatened an Ostrich will lay its head on the floor.

From a distance it looks like it’s “burying its head”.
