Oystercatcher

“Haematopus Ostralegus”

The Oystercatcher is a large black and white wading bird with a long orange/red beak and reddish pink legs.

They eat mussels and cockles.

They either hammer them with their shorter blunt bills or prise them open if they have longer more pointed bills.

They are between 40 and 45cm in length

They have a wingspan of 80 to 85cm

They weigh in at between 430 and 650g.

Around 110,000 pairs breed in the uk.

They live for up to 40 years!

Listen out for the familiar “peep-ing” call.
