“Hirundo Rustica”
The Swallow is a small bird with a red throat and iridescent blue back, pale belly and long tail streamers.
They eat on the wink and mainly invertebrates.
They measure 17 to 19cm in length
They have a wingspan of between 32 to 35cm
They weigh in at between 16 and 25g.
They fly low over water to catch insects.
They can be seen from March to October.
They nest in outbuildings in nooks and crannies.
They normally have 2 broods per year and sometimes 3.
The male and female are virtually identical in appearance.
