White Tailed Sea Eagle
“Haliaeetus Albicilla”
This is Victor.
He patrols the water between Glenelg and Kylerhea
when the tide brings in fish.
He has an 8 foot wingspan and is just magnificent!
The White Tailed Sea Eagle was persecuted to extinction in the uk as the last one was shot on the Shetland Isles in 1916 but was successfully reintroduced back into Scotland.
It is our largest bird of prey and can be seen
in Scotland and on Mull and Skye.
Also known as the Sea Eagle it is the
4th largest eagle in the world.
It is between 66 to 94cm in length
It has a wingspan of 1.78 to 2.45m (8’)
It weighs in at an incredible 3.1 to 6.9kg! (15lb)
They eat mostly fish that they catch themselves
or steal from another bird.
In Scotland they will regularly follow boats
and will be fed fish thrown in to the sea so the paying photographers get their shots.
I have done this and would not do it again as I prefer to photograph this magnificent bird catching its own food.
However, I am happy to share my photo with you!
