The moorhen is a medium sized water bird and related to the coot. The main difference is moorhens have a red “shield” and the coot has a white one. To help remember which is which, moorhen has an “R”for red in its name.
It is mostly black with a red and yellow beak and long green legs and white stripes on their legs.
They spend much of their time in the water foraging for water plants, seeds, grasses, insects, fruit, worms and fish.
They are 31 to 36cm in length
They have a wingspan of 50 to 55cm
They weigh in at between 250 and 400g
